Regional Australians Are Not Immune to Telephone Scams

Living in regional Australia offers many advantages, but protection from telephone scammers is not one of them.
Whether living in a country town or a regional city, Australians receive the same fraudulent calls claiming to come from banks, government agencies or telecommunications companies.
In smaller communities, trust is often stronger. That trust is one of the reasons scammers continue making thousands of calls every day.
Older Australians remain frequent targets, particularly when criminals claim there has been suspicious banking activity or urgent action is required to protect an account.
Community awareness is becoming one of the strongest defences. Local newspapers, community groups, councils and neighbourhood organisations all have an important role in sharing practical advice about recognising scam attempts.
Many residents also believe telecommunications providers should make reporting suspicious numbers much easier, allowing consumers to help identify scam campaigns before they spread more widely.
The Regional Times View
Regional Australia has always looked after its own. Sharing knowledge about scams is another way communities can protect one another. Education, vigilance and simple reporting tools may prove just as valuable as advances in technology.
